4 Reasons Why In-Person Workplace Instruction Is Here to Stay

Posted by Brenda Harralson, Director of eLearning, Rialto Academy on Aug 30, 2018 7:49:00 AM

There’s been a lot of debate recently in employee learning and development circles about the relevance of the the live instructor in the digital age. This discussion all seems to revolve around a central question: Is in-person training becoming extinct, to be replaced by all-digital learning solutions?

As learning and development (L&D) professionals work to stay relevant and competitive, it can be easy to abandon in-person training for more "efficient" online options. Even as leaders of organizations who are becoming increasingly technology-dependent find legitimate gains from new technology, they need to recognize that these L&D options create a broader toolkit that still should include live training. Online, self-paced training fills many gaps in the training landscape, but it is not the panacea to heal all training ills.

Here are four reasons why we think live-and-in-person training, facilitation, and talent development are here to stay—but they must evolve.

Top 4 Challenges of the Virtual Workplace—and How to Overcome Them

Posted by Brenda Harralson, Director of eLearning, Rialto Academy on Jul 3, 2018 7:37:00 AM

Here at Rialto Academy, we run a lean, fast-moving operation with a small team of committed folks who love what we do. Unlike bigger, more corporate companies, we don’t have meetings about meetings, we don’t argue about who left the coffee pot empty in the breakroom, and we don’t have a complicated system for requesting time off. Like a growing number of businesses—both large and small—we all work from home, and we all love the benefits that come with that cozy territory: lack of commute (and traffic!), flexibility when one of us (or one of our kids) is sick, increased ability to focus and be productive…the list goes on and on.

That said, being part of a virtual workplace is not without its drawbacks. We’ve taken a poll among our team to identify the top four challenges we face working on a virtual team—and how we’ve overcome them to stay productive, exceed our clients’ expectations, and enjoy each other’s (virtual) company while we’re at it.

Four Ways Technology Is Rewriting the Rules of Real Estate

Posted by Brenda Harralson, Director of eLearning, Rialto Academy on Jun 28, 2018 7:39:00 AM

You’d expect to hear a lot about the economy at one of the world’s biggest real estate industry conferences. Or perhaps even the current state of housing and urban development. But things are changing in this once-traditional industry, and Keller Williams is on the cutting edge. Gary Keller opened this year’s Family Reunion—a networking and training event that brings together thousands of top agents and leaders in the company—with a rousing speech about the ways technology is disrupting the landscape.

“Technology is rewriting the rules, reinventing job descriptions, creating new industries, and eliminating others. I’m ready to rewrite the rules if you are,” Keller said.

Walking the Walk: 5 Key Steps to Going Deeper and Living Better

Posted by Brenda Harralson, Director of eLearning, Rialto Academy on Jun 5, 2018 7:56:00 AM

I took a long walk with a dear friend this weekend. We covered a lot of ground—five miles, as well as a thorough account of all that’s going on in our lives.

These walks have become an every-other-weekend ritual for us, and something we both count on.

For years, we struggled to find the time to get together. Several months always slipped by between managing to meet for lunch or a glass of wine after work.

For those of us who are burning the candle at multiple ends—demanding careers, active families, and high expectations for ourselves—24 hours in a day rarely feels like enough. There aren’t easy answers to fitting it all in, but for me, walking has proven to be a solution that combines important goals and brings about far greater results than what tends to occur when sedentary.
